BULLDOG SHORT HOPS: Fourteen Mississippi State pitchers allowed combined for a 0.75 earned run average on opening weekend as the Bulldogs swept four games in a first-ever series with the University of Portland at Dudy Noble Field. MSU out-scored UP 31-3. Senior righty Kendall Graveman (1-0, 0.00) worked a staff-longest 6.1 innings and held UP to .105 hitting in his win while senior lefty Luis Pollorena (1-0, 0.00) earned a win in one of his two relief appearances … Sophomore lefty Jacob Lindgren (1-0, 1.50) earned a win as State’s opening-day starter, working a career-longest 6.0 innings … The Bulldogs pounded out 21 hits in a 16-1 win on opening day … Sophomore relief ace Jonathan Holder, on the watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, struck out four of the six batters he faced and earned his first save of the campaign. It preserved 2-1 win, Mississippi State’s 1,000th victory in 46-plus seasons at the current site of Dudy Noble Field … Junior shortstop Adam Frazier hit .500 on opening weekend with a team-best eight hits. The SEC’s 2012 assists leader had 13 assists on an error-free 26-chance weekend and had a hand in all seven double plays turned by the MSU defense. State hit .355 for the weekend and never trailed in the four games … MSU registered an NCAA-leading 71 double plays in 2012 … Senior catcher Mitch Slauter started and played in two games, taking the team RBI lead with four on a 6-for-9 (.667) weekend. With a double and a home run Slauter compiled a team—best 1.111 slugging percentage and a .727 on-base percentage … After hitting 21 home runs in 2012, Mississippi State belted three round-trippers on opening weekend, including blasts by Slauter, junior outfielder C.T. Bradford (.357) and Wes Rea (.200) … State hosts first-time foe Grambling (0-3) Feb. 19 and 2012 NCAA Regional Tournament finalists Purdue (2-2) and Samford (3-1) in this weekend’s Diamond Classic presented by Polk’s Meat Products Feb. 22-24 at Dudy Noble Field.
