STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State freshman catcher Elih Marrero was one of only three freshmen named to the 2016 Johnny Bench Award watch list, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Thursday.

The award is presented annually to the best catcher in college baseball. Semifinalists will be announced May 18 and will be narrowed down to finalists June 6. The winner will be announced at the 19th annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30. Former Bulldog great and current Pittsburgh Pirate Ed Easley took home the award in 2007.

Marrero has seen action in 11 of the Bulldogs’ first 13 games, including nine starts. The Miami native caught fire during the Dodger Stadium Classic in Los Angeles, California this past weekend, going 5 for 8 with a double in three games at No. 9 UCLA, at No. 20 USC and in Dodger Stadium versus Oklahoma.

The son of 10-year MLB veteran Eli Marrero, Elih was drafted in the 29th round of the MLB Draft. He was named the 25th best freshman prospect by Baseball America last month.
