STARKVILLE, Miss. – All-American left-handed pitcher Ross Mitchell was named Southeastern Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The recognition is the first career weekly pitching honor for Mitchell and the first by a Bulldog since Kendall Graveman picked up the nod on April 8, 2013.
“All of us are extremely appreciative of the SEC for recognizing Ross’ work this weekend and our success as a whole this past week,” MSU pitching coach Butch Thompson said. “It is a testament to the connection Ross has with his catchers as well as our identity as a whole on defense.”
Sharing the honors with Missouri righty Brett Graves, Mitchell went 1-0 in two appearances during the undefeated week (6-0), holding opponents to a .091 batting average in seven innings of relief. On the year, the southpaw is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in a team-high 18.0 innings pitched.
Down one run Feb. 28 against a Michigan State squad which had beaten No. 1 Oregon State Feb. 22, Mitchell shut down the Spartans with 6.2 innings of shutout relief. The lefty kept Mississippi State in the game, finished out the contest and earned the win as the Bulldogs rallied back with three runs in the eighth for a 4-2 triumph.
Pitching this past Sunday vs. Eastern Illinois on less than 48 hours rest, Mitchell entered the game with the Bulldogs clinging to a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the sixth. The Panthers’ tying run stood on third and the go-ahead run on second. On the second pitch to EIU first baseman Adam Casson, Mitchell forced a groundout to get out of the jam. With the momentum, Mitchell’s teammates went on to score eight runs in the following two innings en route to the Maroon and White’s first shutout of the season (9-0).
Fans can watch Mitchell and the 10-4 Diamond Dawgs Wednesday at Dudy Noble Field in a 2013 NCAA Starkville Regional rematch against South Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
