STARKVILLE, Miss. — Sophomore left fielder Hunter Renfroe doubled in three runs in the second inning as Mississippi State opened a Saturday college baseball doubleheader with a 6-4 win over the Lipscomb Bisons (4-6). In the nightcap, the Bulldogs (9-2) rode the pitching of Nick Routt, Evan Mitchell and Caleb Reed to a 3-1 win over defending Big East champion Connecticut (3-6) to remain unbeaten in the three-day, six-game event at Dudy Noble Field.

#34 Hunter Renfroe

Freshman right-hander Trevor Fitts (2-0) replaced MSU starter Kendall Graveman in the fourth inning, picking up the win with 4.1 innings of four-hit relief. Taylor Stark closed out the ninth to earn his first save.

Renfroe set career-highs with four hits and a team season-high four RBI while Daryl Norris registered his team-leading sixth multiple-hit game with two safeties.

M.L. Williams collected two hits and Gray Hutchinson drove in both Lipscomb runs with a two-out single in the fourth inning.

Junior lefty Nick Routt scattered four hits over a season-longest six innings and allowed one unearned run Saturday afternoon in State’s 3-1 win over the Huskies.

#2 Demarcus Henderson

The first of three Bulldog fielding miscues and a Ryan Fuller double plated the only UConn run of the game in the fourth inning. Routt, who walked just one of the 24 batters he faced, worked out of the jam and completed his six-inning stint with three strikeouts. Sophomore Evan Mitchell followed Routt, striking out four in two innings of one-hit relief. Mitchell gave way MSU relief ace Caleb Reed, who earned his second save of the year. Fuller went 3-for-4 and had the game’s only extra-base hit.

Henderson and Adam Frazier collected three hits apiece to lead MSU’s all-singles 10-hit attack.

UConn starter Anthony Marzi (0-2) took the loss. He allowed all three Bulldog runs on eight hits while registering a game-high five strikeouts.

The Bulldogs close out their second home weekend tournament of the campaign Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Lipscomb.

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State puts a five-game winning streak on the line Wednesday when the Bulldogs (6-1) play host to the University of Memphis (3-4) in a 4 p.m. college baseball game at Dudy Noble Field.

The game begins a five-game run over a five-day span for Mississippi State, which hosts Connecticut (2-4) and Lipscomb (4-4) this weekend in the second three-day, six-game double round-robin event in as many weekends at Dudy Noble Field.

Junior lefty Luis Pollorena (0-0, 9.00) is set to draw his first start in his second mound appearance of the 2012 campaign Wednesday. Polloreno (Laredo, Texas) worked an inning in relief Feb. 19 as MSU clinched a season-opening weekend series with a 5-4 win over Washington State.

Memphis, coached by former MSU assistant coach Daron Schoenrock, will open with senior righty Chase Joiner (0-1, 11.57) on the mound. The Tigers yielded five runs in the eighth inning Tuesday evening in dropping a 7-2 decision at Ole Miss.

Live video streaming of the 73rd renewal of the MSU-Memphis baseball series on HailStateTV will be available on a subscription basis on the internet (www.hailstate.com/hstvlive), with local radio coverage provided by WNMQ-FM (103.1) in Columbus, Miss.

Junior designated hitter Trey Porter (Gulfport, Miss.) leads the Bulldogs at the plate with a .409 batting. His nine hits include MSU’s first two home runs of the campaign. A pair of sophomore infielders, Adam Frazier (Bishop, Ga.) and Daryl Norris (Fairhope, Ala.) share the team lead with 10 hits each, while sophomore outfielder C.T. Bradford (Pace, Fla.) opens the week riding a team-leading five-game hitting streak.

Mississippi State claimed an 8-3 win over the Tigers in last year’s meeting at AutoZone Park in Memphis, extending MSU’s current series win streak to five games and overall series lead to 51-21.
