The Bulldogs return to the home of the Class AA Mississippi Braves in Pearl, Miss., April 19 for the fifth annual Governor’s Cup matchup with instate rival
Mississippi State holds a 73-36 all-time lead in a baseball rivalry with Southern Miss that got its start in 1947. The teams have evenly split the last 20 meetings over the past 10 seasons, including last year’s two meetings. In 2010, USM prevailed 14-3 in Pearl while State claimed a 16-9 win in Hattiesburg.
State had its five-game overall and four-game SEC winning streak snapped last weekend in Athens, Ga., with the UGA Bulldogs claiming closely-contested 4-1, 4-3 and 4-1 decisions. The pendulum of timely hits swung Georgia’s way as UGA plated eight of its 12 weekend runs on four long-ball swings, while MSU made good on just two of 23 at-bats on the weekend with at least one runner in scoring position.
Southern Miss enters Tuesday’s matchup riding a five-game winning streak and wins in 14 of their last 16 games. The Golden Eagles swept a three-game Conference USA weekend series at Central Florida and own a league-best 5-1 mark. USM also sports the nation’s second-highest RPI ranking, trailing only Mississippi State’s opponent for the coming weekend, defending SEC champion and fourth-ranked Florida (24-5).
The Bulldogs and the Gators open their three-game weekend series at Dudy Noble Field Friday at 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s game, to be televised by Comcast Sports, and Sunday’s series finale are set for 12 p.m. starts. All are part of MSU’s annual spring homecoming festivities on campus, Super Bulldog Weekend presented by Regions Bank.
