I remember watching Tommy John when he pitched with the White Sox, then the Dodgers, then the Yankees.  Incredible story of perseverance in a time when athletes did not have the advantage of all the medical treatments that are available to them today.

I also remember it as a time when each sport had a specific season (not year round), all kids had a chance to play baseball in the summer against each other and the best of the best, parents did not have to spend thousands of dollars to watch their kids play, and the most serious injury kids faced were zits and the occasional broken bone.

Good read here from Tommy John, and his son Dr. Tommy John, III on what parents need to keep in mind in athletics today.
