Apps for Omaha

As I sit here getting ready to head to Omaha on Thursday, I thought I might take a few minutes to share a post I did on another blog site.  It contains a listing of tools you may find useful as you drive to Omaha to watch the Bulldogs play Saturday at 2 PM CT against Oregon State on ESPN2.

So take a gander, and remember, the Road to Omaha starts wherever you are!!

A few months ago, you might recall I travelled to Orlando, FL for a trade show. As is usually the case on any long road trip (yes, I drove) I am always trying to figure out where is the best place to stop for gas, maybe grab something to eat, and even occasionally where is a convenient rest area. So during the trip, while my buddy was taking his shift driving, I took the opportunity to look for some apps that would help me answer the questions “Where are we” and “Are we there yet?”

So here are several apps for Android  and iOS apps that you might want to check out before your next road trip.

GasBuddy – Find Cheap Gas

If you have ever been tooling down the interstate or some local highway you are not familiar with, only to see that “Low Fuel” indicator light up on the dash. Or maybe you are just in a city and looking for a particular brand of gas. This app is a great one for you. You can look for fuel in a specific city, or you can look for a station near where you are, complete with distance to the station. You can sort the list by price, or you can look for a specific grade of gas or diesel. Click on the station you want, and be given driving directions. Or, look at a map view and take your choice. Very helpful for me when I am driving to Omaha for the College World Series and try to limit the number of stops I make.

Best Restaurant Finder

Again, you are driving and it is later in the evening, or it is the weekend. You want to stop for a bit and grab a bite to eat. Fire up this app and choose the type establishment you want to visit, click your current location, and viola…places to eat, and more importantly, whether or not they are open! One more click and there are reviews, and directions to the location. Can’t beat it if you travel a lot to unfamiliar locations.

Truck Stop Locator

Always a good app to have when travelling. On the highway and suddenly the car starts acting up, you will wish you had this.  And I can tell you from experience, between St. Joseph, MO and Omaha, NE there are not too many places to stop for help. So better to have this app and be able to look up where to go before our old friend Mayhem sets in! (and no, that is NOT a plug for any insurance company)  Find out what franchise your truck stop is and what service they have.

My-Cast Weather Lite

Always a good idea to know what the weather is like where you are and where you are going. I remember the time going through Cape Girardeau, MO when the heavens decided to shut out the sunlight and let loose a frog floater. Had no idea we were driving through the middle of a severe thunderstorm warning area into a tornado warning area. If we had only had this app, along with the handy dandy truck stop locator, we could have stopped for lunch and the safety of a building instead of pushing on through the storm. Gives you warning for your location based on GPS. Actually brought to you by the good folks at Garman.

So before you head out on the road for your next trip, you might want to take a look at these apps. Besides, the price (FREE) can’t be beat. Unless you are looking for them to pay you to use them!! hahaha

Looking at numbers

English: National Collegiate Athletic Associat...

I was sitting here today after watching Kendall Graveman throw his 3rd consecutive complete game of the season.  At Arkansas, versus Florida, and now at Texas A&M.  Pretty impressive in this day of pitching matchups.  So I decided to look around and check out some NCAA numbers oncomplete games in a season.  Read more

DOGS NIP PORTLAND FOR 1,000th WIN AT DUDY NOBLE FIELD

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Junior outfielder Demarcus Henderson delivered a clutch RBI single in the sixth inning and sophomore relief ace Jonathan Holder tossed 1.2 innings of shutout relief as No. 5 Mississippi State (2-0) nipped the Portland Pilots (0-2) 2-1 on a wind-chilled Saturday afternoon Dudy Noble Field. Diamond Dogs Edged By LSU 4-3 In Game 2

BATON ROUGE, La. – Mississippi State’s first road trip of the baseball season served up another heart-breaker Saturday night as the 21st-ranked Bulldogs dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 10 LSU in Southeastern Conference action at Alex Box Stadium.

With the victory, LSU clinched its sixth straight series win from MSU. The Tigers have won 11 of the past 13 contests played against the Bulldogs.

“We are real pleased with the pitching part of it right now,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “Offensively, we have too many guys (offensively) trying to do too much right now. LSU has gotten situational hits each of these two games and we haven’t.”

LSU scored twice in the bottom half of the tenth inning to post a 3-2 victory in Friday’s series opener. The Tigers are now 16-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Bulldogs are now 14-7 and 0-2. On its first road trip of the season, the Bulldogs have lost all four, with three of those defeats coming by a single run.

“Right now, we are trying to do too much,” Cohen said. “We have guys wrestling with the bat. It is just not happening for us right now. We have to get better. The kids are really competing their tails off.

“The SEC isn’t forgiving. It does not care if you are playing hard or playing with emotion. All of the league cares about is whether you won or lost. We have young guys and we have to get them playing at a higher level. We have the talent to do it. We just have to find a way.”

The Bulldogs had another solid pitching performance. Starting pitcher Nick Routt (1-2) was lifted with two outs in the fourth inning. Routt allowed two hits and three runs (all earned), with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

In relief, Evan Mitchell completed the four-hitter. Mitchell allowed two hits and one run (earned), with seven strikeouts and three walks.

“Evan really gave us a lift,” Cohen said. “He competed and gave us a chance. We have pitched both of these games very well. The margin of error is very small in this league. We haven’t caught any breaks, either.”

MSU had its best scoring chance in the ninth inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out but managed only a single run on a sacrifice fly by Demarcus Henderson. Already with four hits in the contest, Trey Porter struck out to end the contest.

“Trey is up there in his last at-bat trying to hit the ball to the moon,” Cohen said. “As coaches, we have to work on getting him to calm down. That was a failure on my part. We had several players in the last at-bat trying to do too much. You just have to remain patient and do you part to get the barrel of the bat where it needs to be.”

LSU built a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Bulldogs answered with an RBI-single from Porter in the third inning. Down 4-1, the Bulldogs scored again in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Porter.

The Bulldogs stranded nine base runners and hit into four double plays.

“On three of those doubles play, we had the hit-and-run on and we fouled off a pitch,” Cohen said. “It is hard to hit-and-run more than one time in at-bat. Those are some of the breaks working against us right now.”

The Bulldogs finished with 10 hits, including Porter’s first four-hit night in the Maroon and White.

Tyler Hanover had two hits for LSU. Starting pitcher Ryan Eades (4-1) worked seven innings for the win, while Nick Goody threw the ninth inning for his second save.

The series finale is at 1 p.m. Sunday.

STATE SWEEPS LIPSCOMB, UCONN IN SATURDAY TWINBILL

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Sophomore left fielder Hunter Renfroe doubled in three runs in the second inning as Mississippi State opened a Saturday college baseball doubleheader with a 6-4 win over the Lipscomb Bisons (4-6). In the nightcap, the Bulldogs (9-2) rode the pitching of Nick Routt, Evan Mitchell and Caleb Reed to a 3-1 win over defending Big East champion Connecticut (3-6) to remain unbeaten in the three-day, six-game event at Dudy Noble Field.

#34 Hunter Renfroe

Freshman right-hander Trevor Fitts (2-0) replaced MSU starter Kendall Graveman in the fourth inning, picking up the win with 4.1 innings of four-hit relief. Taylor Stark closed out the ninth to earn his first save.

Renfroe set career-highs with four hits and a team season-high four RBI while Daryl Norris registered his team-leading sixth multiple-hit game with two safeties.

M.L. Williams collected two hits and Gray Hutchinson drove in both Lipscomb runs with a two-out single in the fourth inning.

Junior lefty Nick Routt scattered four hits over a season-longest six innings and allowed one unearned run Saturday afternoon in State’s 3-1 win over the Huskies.

#2 Demarcus Henderson

The first of three Bulldog fielding miscues and a Ryan Fuller double plated the only UConn run of the game in the fourth inning. Routt, who walked just one of the 24 batters he faced, worked out of the jam and completed his six-inning stint with three strikeouts. Sophomore Evan Mitchell followed Routt, striking out four in two innings of one-hit relief. Mitchell gave way MSU relief ace Caleb Reed, who earned his second save of the year. Fuller went 3-for-4 and had the game’s only extra-base hit.

Henderson and Adam Frazier collected three hits apiece to lead MSU’s all-singles 10-hit attack.

UConn starter Anthony Marzi (0-2) took the loss. He allowed all three Bulldog runs on eight hits while registering a game-high five strikeouts.

The Bulldogs close out their second home weekend tournament of the campaign Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Lipscomb.
